Heanor
D H Lawrence, born at Eastwood 2 miles away,
described the bricks and mortar of ‘Hainor’ as ‘a
dry, brittle, terrible corruption spreading over the
face of the land’ (The Rainbow), and it is not out
of devotion to him that the parish church is
dedicated to Saint Lawrence! Things have
changed, however, since the controversial
novelist wrote those words, and much has been
done to make good the damaged lands and
‘spoil heaps’ that justified that description.
Much expanded, Heanor today looks every bit
the important industrial town that it is. Heanor
man Henry Garnett became a leading figure in
the notorious Gunpowder Plot, and though for a
while he escaped capture he was eventually
taken to the Tower and suffered a similar fate to
that of the unfortunate Guy Fawkes.
